Smart Meters

An update on current status of the Review recommendations

The Smart Meter workstream recommendations are being taken forward by several groups involved in the wider smart meter rollout programme including:

(i) BEIS’ Consumer Reference Group (CRG) is taking forward recommendation 20, ensuring that customers have a positive experience throughout their smart meter installation journey, and receive high quality advice information and materials, with the Smart Meter Installation Code of Practice looking specifically at the provision of tailored energy efficiency advice to customers. Also, the BEIS post-installation support sub-group is developing principles to ensure suppliers support vulnerable customers to receive the benefits of smart following a smart meter installation.

Industry is also working to develop Smart Prepayment Meter Change of Supplier Principles to support prepayment customers in the event of any temporary loss of credit that may come about following a switch.

(ii) BEIS Smart Meters Operational Group (SMOG) group is taking forward recommendations 21 & 22, through its regular group meeting and subgroup structure to ensure that the capacity and skills of smart meter installers deliver a safe and efficient roll-out, and that smart meters can be installed in as many properties as possible, regardless of property type.
